Who We Are

Chatsworth's Oldest Running Pre-School

The Cato Pre-School was started in 1968 by the Mobeni Heights Woman's Group.  After Mobeni Heights was created in 1964, residents were moved in from all around Durban.

The Woman's Group recognised the need for nursery school, and a school was created, operating initially from homes in the area (Highway Place, Silverbell Terrrace, Greenfern Road etc), and at one stage at a shop at the Mobeni Heights Shopping Centre.

One area that people were moved in from was Cato Manor.   The Cato Indian Education Trust, under the leadership of Mr Dennis V Naiker, funded the nursery school in Mobeni Heights and the school relocated to the newly built Civic Centre (Doorgha Hall) in 1979.

In the 80's the school had a very large school population, with multiple teachers who started their teaching career from the school.

Mobeni Heights prided itself in Education.  Many of the past students of Cato Pre-Primary School have excelled in the Academic Field becoming leading scientists, doctors, teachers, leaders and professionals in society.

Past alumni of the school have been instrumental in the fight against HIV/AIDs as well as the most recent Covid-19 Pandemic.

The school has been running continuously from 1968, and is one of the oldest schools in Chatsworth.

In 2022, 54 years later, the School Board embarked on a Re-launch Campaign to preserve the name and legacy of Cato Pre-school.  Renovations have begun and the school has been rebranded.

With the influx of unlicenced, illegal home-based schools in and around Chatsworth, it has become important to provide a facility that is safe, conducive to learning, and one that will provide an education that will once again provide an internationally acceptable first step for our young ones.

Cato is registered with the Department of Social Development and Department of Basic Education.   The School is a registered Non-Profit Organisation, and registered with the eThekwini Municipality as a School Not for Gain.
